Effect of zirconia surface treatment on shear bond strength to resin cements

Alessandra Satake, José Luiz Guimarães de Figueiredo, Walter Leonardo Siqueira Zaia

Introduction: This study aimed at examining current scientific evidences about the zirconia surface treatment methods most suitable for better adhesion to resin cements, according to scientific literature published from January 2007 to February 2012. Zirconia infrastructures gained prominence among fixed prosthesis materials, due to its physical, biological and aesthetic properties. However, the process of union of this structure to dental cements is still a question. Zirconia ceramics are characterized by their extremely hard surfaces and by having no silica in its composition, precluding the use of the same type of treatment used for feldspatic ceramics (hydrofluoric acid and silane). Several types of surface treatment are being investigated in an attempt to improve the cement/zirconia bonding interface. Methods: Databases used were Medline, Pubmed, Web of Science and Cochrane Library. After the search, inclusion and exclusion criteria were applied, remaining 21 articles for final analysis. Results: After extraction of the data, it was observed that the best results were found in association with air abrasion or silica coating and metal primers, or silanes. Conclusion: It was not possible to perform a quantitative analysis due to heterogeneity of the studies, regarding the type of treatment, cement used, type of aging, mechanical testing, method used for thermal cycling test, storage form, among others. Thus it is necessary to establish international standards for conducting scientific research.
