Diamond burs are abrasive rotary instruments used in Restorative Dentistry. These burs may differ in terms of diamond granulation, thereby damaging the quality and standardization of preparations. The aim of this study was to analyze and compare by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) the quality of diamond beads impregnated and the amount of wear experienced by diamond burs. A total of 80 diamond burs, model 1014, of eight different trademarks were used: KG Sorensen 1014 and 1014G, Kavo 1014 Edenta, Intensiv, Jota, Komet, Meisinger and Neo Diamond. The instruments were tested in lithium disilicate blocks (n = 5), and the samples were subjected to six sequential wear procedures of 3 minutes each. At the beginning and end of each stage, SEM was performed. As a result, it was observed that the burs of groups Jota, Neo Diamond, Mesinger, Kavo and Intensiv had their metal base revealed, thus significantly reducing the power of wear. The burs presenting greater power of wear 15 minutes after the end of the test were: KG Sorensen 1014, KG Sorensen 1014G, Edenta and Komet. After testing, it was concluded that there was a change of shape, in addition to loss of diamonds. Thus, the present study emphasizes the importance of replacing rotary instruments in clinical practice.
