Introduction: Virtual articulators allow tridimensional assessment of static and dynamic occlusion during prosthetic planning without the limitations of conventional mechanical methods. Objective: The aim of the present study was to conduct a literature review on the role of virtual articulators in Restorative Dentistry. Methods: A search was performed in the following electronic databases: PubMed, Cochrane and Scopus, using the keywords “dental occlusion,” “maxillomandibular records,” “virtual articulator,” “adjustable virtual articulator,” “mathematically simulated virtual articulator.” Results: The search strategy yielded 56 publications, of which 14 were considered eligible to the present study. Conclusion: According to the literature, virtual articulators provide high accuracy in occlusal register for the manufacturing of dental prostheses. Further studies are needed in order to validate its use during dental practice.
Keywords: Dental articulators. Dental prosthesis. Dental occlusion.
