Orthodontic treatment with self-ligating appliance

Reginaldo Zanelato

Several technological innovations are frequently introduced into the orthodontic market, among which we can point out self-ligating appliances. The use of such appliances emphasize reduction in treatment time, as they have low friction as a feature, which makes the initiation of tooth movement easier by reducing the initial resistance to movement. Self-ligating appliances have raised great interest among clinicians, as they believe that orthodontic treatment becomes easier and faster. During tooth movement, friction can be static or dynamic, being closely related to the bracket material, contact between the archwire and the bracket and, mainly, the ligating system. Due to the possibility of having control over these variables, which influence orthodontic movement, the choice of bracket system should be related to treatment goals. In other words, in cases that demand a great amount of dental movement by means of sliding mechanics, in which torque control is not relevant, self-ligating brackets will present a better performance when compared to conventional brackets.
