Cantilevers for Class II correction.

Larry White

Of all the biomechanical techniques and systems orthodontists must understand, cantilever are the most simple, but perhaps the least appreciated instrument in this armamentarium. Cantilevers by definition must have an end fixed in a bracket, tube or acrylic, and an active end that has only a one-point contact against a tooth or a wire. This article displays and describes several types of cantilevers for correcting Class II malocclusions, and a new application of the cantilever principle is illustrated with a Class II patient. This new application offers clinicians a simple, effective and economical manner of correcting one of their most formidable challenges.
