The tendency towards the long-term use of lingual fixed orthodontic retainers has been associated with impaired oral hygiene. Recent studies have searched for appliance design and material that may be more hygienic and facilitate flossing, thereby providing better plaque control. The present article describes a new fixed 3x3 orthodontic retainer designed with V-bends in horizontal direction, with a view to facilitating flossing. The retainer was manufactured with 0.6mm-diameter round stainless steel wire (0.024-in) and a #139 plier. The V-bend is made horizontally and parallel to the occlusal plane, in the region of each interproximal contact point of the six anterior teeth. The design of the mandibular lingual fixed 3x3 orthodontic retainer with V-bend allows adequate hygiene in the interproximal region of anterior teeth and prevents interproximal gingivitis, especially in cases in which incisors receive the retainer, instead of canines only.
