The resorption of maxillary incisors regarding the need for traction of impacted canines

Introduction: Since the formation of canines germ until their eruption into the oral cavity, these teeth may present a few disorders which prevent normal eruption, thereby causing impaction. The following factors exert the strongest influence over this condition: permanence of the predecessor canine and lack of space in the dental arch. Objective: This study aims to present a clinical case of a 18-yearold patient with impacted maxillary right canine and the prolonged presence of the predecessor deciduous tooth (#53). Case report: Initial radiographs suggested that the canine was located near central and lateral incisors. Therefore, the mechanics chosen for mechanical traction, with flexible wires combined with stiff wires, aimed to reduce mechanical traction side effects. After treatment, there was resorption of central and lateral incisors because despite exerting mild forces, the position of close contact between the canine crown with the roots of incisors was decisive for resorption. After treatment, the patient was subjected to periodic control, during which the roots of those teeth were observed clinically and radiographically. Conclusion: Despite side effects, the treatment plan for mechanical traction was adequate, especially because the end result provided the patient with a stable and satisfactory occlusion, thereby eliminating the need for extraction and implant placement for occlusal rehabilitation.
