Aesthetic augmentation in orthognathic surgery: are there indications?

Introduction: Aesthetic results in orthognathic surgery is one of the main goals of patients, orthodontists and surgeons. Correction of the maxillomandibular bone deformity usually restores functions of the stomatognathic system and facial aesthetics. However, the desired symmetry and soft tissue projection is not always obtained only with the bone movement. In this situations, the soft tissue augmentation with methylmethacrylate (PMMA) acts as an adjuvant to achieve facial contour that meet the aesthetic expectations of patients and surgeons. Objective: This article reviews the use of PMMA as an augmentation material in the craniofacial region, addressing its historical perspective, advantages and biological aspects. The main indications are illustrated with figures and clinical cases.
