Objective: To evaluate the occurrence of white spot lesions when acid etching is performed exceeding bracket area and when acid etching fails to cover the area corresponding to the bracket base. Methods: For the present study, twenty bovine incisors were used to simulate the following clinical situations: 1) Bracket bonding with etching, adhesive and resin; 2) Enamel etching and adhesive; 3) Bracket bonding without prior etching, only adhesive and resin; 4) Control area in which a white spot lesion was deliberately created. All twenty samples were subjected to an acid solution (pH 2.2) of 5% trisodium citrate and 20% formic, for 15 minutes, and then photographed with the aid of a metal structure used for standardization. The images were analyzed with the software Image J. Results: Significant differences among groups indicated that the area under the bracket base in Groups 1 and 3 showed no demineralization, while Group 2 showed demineralization. Conclusions: Surplus etching increases the susceptibility of white spot formation around the bracket. However, even when acid etching is inadequate, the adhesive and the bracket were able to protect the surface against demineralization. However, this may impair the adhesive strength necessary to bracket bonding.
