Complications related to orthodontic mini-implants

The mini-implants can easily be installed and most of time are stable throughout all the treatment time. However, in similarity to other health procedures, some complications may occur. Thus, the present work aims to describe and discuss the main complications related to the use of this anchoring method. They are: mini-implant sliding, mini-implant fracture, mini-implant contact with periodontal ligament or tooth root, perforation of the maxillary sinus or nasal mucosa, neural lesion, tooth root perforation by motor-driven drilling, mini-implant mobility, subcutaneous emphysema, mini-implant or digital key swallowing, transient bacteremia, infection, inflammation around the mini-implant, tissue hyperplasia around the mini-implants and canker sores. Possible mini-implant complications can be minimized with technical training and proper planning. Despite the possible complications, mini-implants present a great biological cost-benefit when considering the mechanical advantages obtained.
