Posterior crossbite treatment through arch form: case report

Introduction: The posterior crossbite is defined as an abnormal buccolingual relation of at least one teeth between jaws. It is clearly classified in the literature with multiple etiological factors, and several therapeutic modalities, which are driven by the origin of the cause. This type of malocclusion is not able to be self-corrected and, when it is not treated early, is likely to persist in the permanent dentition. Methods: This paper describes the orthodontic treatment performed in an adult patient, Angle Class III malocclusion with asymmetric face, showing unilateral posterior crossbite. In the absence of changes in facial attractiveness, the compensatory treatment using the concept of restoring the arch shape is the chosen therapy, to eliminate the excrescence and restore the occlusion. This treatment model is presented in this report, in order to describe the system and highlight its advantages. Results: At the end of treatment, the posterior crossbite malocclusion was corrected by restoring the arch shape and keeping the reference unit due light forces. The Angle Class III was also corrected, giving satisfactory intercuspation. Conclusions: The compensatory treatment was the best therapeutic approach, reestablishing an adequate occlusion and restoring the arches shape, with a very satisfactory aesthetic result, by means of a minimalist mechanics.
