Correction of dental midline deviation: proposal for a specific arch approach

Roberto Carlos Bodart Brandão, Camila de Sousa Dardengo

Introduction: The mechanical approach for correction of midline deviation should be taken into account when planning the patients treatment, once the occlusion asymmetries affect most individuals, and the smiling esthetics is the major recurring complaint in orthodontic offices. Method: This paper introduces an arch particularly developed to correct dental midline deviation and ways for its activation. It is applied after the alignment and leveling arches, in the cases of canine impacted on one side of the arch, so as to open space to implants, when maxillary lateral incisors are missing, or for other cases of substantial midline shift. Results: The arch introduced in this paper showed clinical effectiveness to midline correction, thus moving the incisors as a whole, concurrently promoting controlled opening space, enabling enough room for a canine traction or for an implant-supported prosthetic crown. Conclusion: The use of this arch for midline correction shows several advantages, such as promoting lateral movement of the teeth, without retraction; elimination of undesirable effects of friction; avoidance of anterior diastema opening, as usual in sliding mechanics; and better control of the occlusion plan.
