Introduction: The knowledge regarding the materials used, the treatments adopted and the available techniques are paramount to have an efficient orthodontic treatment. Objective: This paper aimed at verifying the difference between the shear bond strength when using only resin or using resin and orthodontic adhesive at the button base for transference and bonding. Methods: The sample was composed of 50 premolars. G1: button base cleaned with 96% alcohol; adhesive applied to the tooth and resin at the button base. G2: base cleaned with 96% alcohol; resin applied to the tooth and then to the button base. G3: base cleaned with 96% alcohol, aluminum oxide jet and again 96% alcohol; the resin was applied to the tooth and then to the button base. G4: base cleaned with 96% alcohol; the adhesive was applied to the tooth, and then the same system to the button base. G5: base cleaned with 96% alcohol, aluminum oxide jet and again 96% alcohol; adhesive applied to the tooth and then to the button base. The Transbord XT resin and the Versat 502 universal essay machine were used for the analysis. Results: There was no significant difference among the groups in relation to the results. Conclusion: In statistic terms, in regards to the shear bond testing, both methods presented satisfactory resistance.
