Orthodontic treatment impact’s in the development of dentition, occlusion and facial aesthetic

Fábio Lourenço Romano, Mírian Aiko Nakane Matsumoto

Orthodontic treatment in mixed dentition significantly help to decrease the severity of malocclusions, allowing a faster and less complex corrective treatment. In some situations, the correct orthodontic treatment can definitively solve occlusal problems, avoiding any type of future treatment. The aim of this work was to report the orthodontic intervention performed in a 7-year-old child with transverse maxillary hypoplasia and anterior open bite in the mixed dentition. No corrective orthodontic treatment was necessary in the permanent dentition. The transverse maxillary hypoplasia was corrected with Rapid Maxillary Expansion (RME) and then with upper removable appliance with palatal grid, to intercept lingual interposition. After approximately 12 months of treatment, the occlusal problems were corrected, and the patient was followed up to the permanent dentition. It could be concluded with this report that orthodontic intervention in the mixed dentition, when performed in an appropriate and judicious way, can reduce future orthodontic problems or avoid them, as it eliminates interferences in the growth and development of maxillary teeth and bones, making it possible to obtain occlusion and facial esthetics.
