Introduction: In patients with maxillary atresia and/or posterior crossbite, rapid maxillary expansion (REM) is generally the orthodontic treatment of choice, whether patients are children, adolescents or young adults. This therapy requires fabrication of an orthodontic/orthopedic appliance, frequently of the tooth-tissue-borne type, which requires daily activations. Objective: The aim of this study was to describe four clinical cases that presented complications resulting from the RME procedure and their complete spontaneous repair after the removal of the orthodontic appliance. Conclusion: The support provided by the mucosa because of the acrylic structure of Haas expander may cause the formation of lesions at palatal mucosa, resulted from compression of soft tissues in this region.
Keywords: Palatal expansion technique. Necrosis. Palate.
