External cervical resorptions in Orthodontics: notes about causes, distribution and differentiation

Root resorptions associated with orthodontic treatments are the inflammatory external apical root resorptions; other resorptions are associated with different causes and may be simultaneous or coincident. However, in two conditions, external cervical resorptions may be associated with orthodontic treatments, as they may be induced by surgical procedures performed by the oral and maxillofacial surgeon as part of the treatment: 1) surgical preparation for orthodontic forced eruption, when the dental follicle is manipulated; and 2) extraction of intact teeth as part of orthodontic treatment planning. External cervical resorptions are common and often confused with abfraction or cervical caries. The area of resorption is covered or hidden by normal or mildly inflamed gingiva, whereas cervical caries and abfraction are exposed in the cervical area of the buccal or lingual surface.
