The cause of palatine and mandibular tori is unrelated to occlusion

Alberto Consolaro

The palatine and mandibular tori are a type of form anomaly due to developmental abnormalities, it manifests on late growth and maturation of the jaws and has a genetic and hereditary nature. The “occlusal hypothesis” would consider the torus an adaptive response to occlusal overload, bruxism, clenching, and other external factors, but the torus are neither adaptive hyperplasia or hypertrophy nor neoplasm. The size of the torus stabilizes at the end of jaw growth around the age of 22 to 24 years, no longer regresses or grows after this age, and microscopically consists of normal bone.
