Treatment of Class II malocclusion with anterior open bite and severe periodontal disease

Orthodontic treatment in adults may demand additional complexities as missing teeth and severe periodontal disease. In these cases, the use of skeletal anchorage, such as dental implants and/or orthodontic miniplates, might be an interesting tool not only to minimize side effects in the remaining teeth, but also to achieve complex orthodontic movements. The present article reports the treatment of an adult patient with severe periodontal disease, missing teeth, anterior open bite and Class II malocclusion, associated to tongue thrusting habit. Interdisciplinary treatment involved Periodontics, Orthodontics, Prostodontics and Muscle therapy. The undergone compensatory treatment using skeletal anchorage achieved satisfactory esthetic and functional results, allowing dental rehabilitation and maintenance of the remaining teeth. The case was presented to the Brazilian Board of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics (BBO) as a requirement for the BBO certification.
