Objective: To evaluate the friction force and surface roughness of three different nickel-titanium wires. Material and Methods: Three different wires of the same thickness 0.016” x 0.022” were evaluated: Flexy Blue-Ti Superelastic NiTi (Orthometric, Marília/SP, Brazil); NiTi Superelastic Black (Ortho-Organiz- ers, Carlsbad, CA, USA) and NiTi Thermal Smart (Orthometric, Marília/SP, Brazil). For each type, 10 samples of 30mm each were tested. The wires were adapted in a self-ligating lower incisor bracket, fixed in a PVC connector with acrylic resin in two different angulations (0o and 5o) simulating different clinical situations. The friction force was evaluated in a universal test machine (EMIC) and a rugosimeter was used to evaluate surface roughness. To verify the normality of the data, the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test was applied, and for comparison between the groups, the ANOVA test followed by the Tukey test, adopting a level of significance of 0.05. Results: Blue-Ti wire showed lower friction (0.065 MPa), followed by NiTi Black wire (0.174 MPa) and Thermoactivated NiTi wire (0.244 MPa). When the surface roughness was evaluated, less roughness was found in NiTi Black wire (0.254 Ra), followed by Blue-Ti (0,269 Ra) and NiTi-thermo (0.358 Ra), without, however, presenting a statistically significant difference. Conclusion: The super-elastic Blue-Ti wire presented less friction at both angulations (0o and 5o). There was no difference between the different wires analyzed, regarding surface roughness.
