Orthodontic treatment of skeletal Class II malocclusion in a patient with secondary microcephaly

Introduction: Orthodontic treatment of Class II malocclusion is widely acknowledged and discussed in the literature. The conditions that make treatment more or less complex depend on the particularities of each patient. The complexity of orthodontic treatment is greater in patients with special needs. Therefore, is necessity adequate treatment according to patient’s limitation. Description: The aim of this study was to report a clinical case of Class II malocclusion in a patient with secondary microcephalia, symptomatic focal epilepsy, mental health problems, speech difficulties and limitation of movement. Orthodontic treatment was performed in two stages: (1) interceptive treatment, in mixed dentition, using removable and extraoral appliances; (2) corrective treatment, in permanent dentition, using fixed appliances. Both treatments were associated with multidisciplinary interventions. Results: Treatment was regarded as adequate, considering the limitations of the case. The results demonstrated a reduction in the convexity of the skeletal profile, adequate and functional occlusion and improved facial esthetics, providing a better quality of life. Conclusion: In order to reduce total treatment time, greater precision in procedures is required to achieve the treatment goals in these patients.
