Virtual orthodontic model trimming: hit or bias?

Cristine B. André

INTRODUCTION: orthodontic trimming models are good allies to diagnosis, whether 2D or 3D, and are very successful mainly as study models. From a correct positioning of the bases, we can comprehend the correct position of dental arch and the smile line of patients. Anyhow, this procedure can be a bias if some cares are not taken. DESCRIPTION: it will be discussed some frequent problems during the procedure of virtual orthodontic trimming, as the mash tridimensional analysis of the STL model. RESULTS: lack of adequate software, knowledge and correct image acquisition change the real anatomy of 3D model, and consequently they change clinical results as the production of orthodontic appliances. CONCLUSION: Both the capture of 3D images (scanning), and the process of correct insertion of the model trimming bases, are the two pillars for achieving success with orthodontic trimming models that provide real data to the clinician, as well as a good adaptation of orthodontic appliances and correct results of virtual model analysis.
