Dogmas and myths about pulp in orthodontic treatment, occlusal trauma and periodontal disease

ALBERTO CONSOLARO, DARIO A. OLIVEIRA MIRANDA, RENATA BIANCO CONSOLARO

Introduction: The implications of orthodontic treatment on the pulp and its aging, on occlusal trauma and periodontal disease, have dogmas and myths from a time when nothing could be proven or tested with much precision and methodology, because images were poor and microscopic observations, very rare. Description: What ages the pulp is not the age of the person, but factors external to the dentinopulpal complex. Orthodontic treatment, occlusal trauma, and chronic inflammatory periodontal disease do not age the pulp. On the other hand, dental trauma causes calcic metamorphosis of the pulp and aseptic necrosis, but it also does not age the dentinopulpal complex. It is also a dogma to state that imaging exams are not important aids in the diagnosis of pulpal alterations. Conclusion: For the clinician, it is very important to have defined causes for pulpal alterations based on well-established evidence, eliminating opinionated, traditional, and dogmatic aspects.

Keywords: Pulpal aging. Pulpal necrosis, Calcic pulp metamorphosis. Orthodontic movement.
