Orthodontic appliances on mini-implants, how to protect the peri-implant region

Cristiane B. André

Introduction: The preservation of peri-implant tissues during orthodontic mechanics associated with mini-implants is extremely important for the success of the technique. Objective: The purpose of this work is to present a safety device for this region, by means of a ring system. Description: The ring is modeled in a three-dimensional manner, varying according to the brand of the selected mini-implant, planned biomechanics and the anatomical variations of each patient. Later, this file gains its physical shape in 304 stainless steel, by a micro machining process, creating a small circular ring, with a rounding shape that protects the surrounding tissues. Results: With this system it is possible to design a ring that is compatible with each brand of mini-implant, creating a specific design for the type of biomechanics chosen. Once the ring is placed on the previously installed mini-implants, it is possible to work normally with asymmetric installations. This system allows to make provisional prostheses and reduces the indication of surgical processes, such as mini-plates. Conclusion: The stability of the mini-implants, as well as the protection of the peri-implant region, are of extreme importance for the success of the mechanics; there- fore, it is important that the rings manufactured in CAD respect the patient’s anatomy, as well as the biomechanics used. We cannot forget to choose a suitable mini-implant model, as well as a correct image acquisition, resulting in a high precision work.
