Diastema closure with torque and overbite control

Liliana Ávila MALTAGLIATI

Introduction: Generalized diastema malocclusion is challenging for the orthodontists, since it is frequently combined with normal or deep bite and wide arches, and the mechanics needed to close the spaces often leads to worsen of bite overlap, tip incisors lingually and reduces arch perimeter, resulting in great post-treatment instability. Objectives: The main objective of this study is to propose and describe step by step a simple and practical method to close diastema spaces, with minimal changing on tip, overbite and arch width, using self-ligating or conventional brackets and stops, reducing the anterior spaces early on treatment with quick aesthetical improvement. Conclusion: By means of a clinical case presentation, it is shown that the spaces can be closed with minimal changes on anterior teeth inclination and overbite, at the same time that the main aesthetically impairment that most bother patients can be solved early on treatment.
