Your software is misleading you: Digital challenges of orthodontics

Guilherme Bernd

Introduction: Orthodontics is becoming more digital every day, and the adaptation to this new reality is necessary. However, the choice of orthodontic software tools can influence our planning and even the diagnosis. Knowledge of such digital tools and how they work has great importance when choosing the software that we will use, and understanding their characteristics and limitations can influence our results. Objectives: Based on a clinical case, we demonstrate important aspects of how software interferes in our decisions and results. Thus, segmentation, movement algorithms, digital collisions and gingival deformation are some of the important aspects that must be analyzed. Conclusion: Different software can bring divergent results regarding the calculation of the quantity of aligners and other aspects. Technology is rapidly evolving in this regard, with more advanced applications and improved artificial intelligence, however, the suggestions made by software algorithms cannot override the orthodontist’s decisions regarding diagnosis, planning strategies and clinical management in order to obtain excellence in our results.
