C expander: clinical application based on dentoskeletal responses obtained by tomographic evaluation

Objectives: The aim of this study is to present the stages for confection of the C expander appliance, an original South Korean appliance (Biocreative Strategy) with six miniscrews on the palate, acrylic body, regular expander screw and without tooth support, illustrating with a case report the dental and skeletal effects that occurred in an adult patient who had unilateral posterior crossbite and gingival recessions in the posterior teeth. Methods: To assess dental changes that occurred after using this appliance, cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans were used before and after the procedure. Results: The CBCT showed an increase in the maxillary length after rapid palatal expansion, and no side effects on the maxillary molars. Conclusion: The C expander appliance is an effective device to expand the maxilla in adult patients, and do not show side effects on the maxillary molars, since these teeth are not used as anchorage for the appliance.
