Introduction: In rehabilitated teeth, the presence of surface roughness, besides being uncomfortable, leads to the accumulation of biofilm, becoming a potential risk factor for caries and periodontal diseases. Objective: Considering that self-curing acrylic resins are widely used in the manufacture of removable orthodontic appliances, the objective of this study was to evaluate the surface roughness of self-curing acrylic resin. Methods: Fifty specimens were divided into halves and then allocated into four groups, two experimental groups (n = 25, each group), and two control groups (n = 25, each group). The two experimental groups were submitted to the finishing process with tungsten cutter and strips of sandpaper, and to the polishing process with brush with hairs and mixture of pumice powder and water, then polished with cloth wheel with a mixture of pumice and water. After these steps, only one of the experimental groups was polished with musseline wheel and white powder of Spain and water. All groups were submitted to the surface roughness test. Results: The bilateral p value found was p = 0.03, proving statistical significance. Conclusion: It is concluded that the polishing with musseline disc and white of Spain contributes to the reduction of surface roughness and can provide better oral health.
