Bonding strength as a function of enamel adhesive interface

Guoqiang GUAN, Yasuhiko ASAI, Claude G. MATASA, Tetsuo HATTORI, Seiji MITANI

The presumption that bond strength is strongly influenced by the enamel-adhesive (E/A) interface, four orthodontic adhesives, Orthomite Superbond, System 1+, Transbond XT and Kurasper F were bonded to bovine teeth. The brackets were debonded measuring the necessary shear force, and the interfaces and the adhesive sheaths resulted were examined both as such and after the dissolution of enamel structures using solutions of chelating agents. The examination was performed with the help of scanning electron microscopy/SEM and energy dispersive spectrum/EDS X-ray microanalysis. The findings indicate that bond strength is closely related both to the morphology of the interface and the nature of the adhesive, the determining factor being the depth and the neck thickness of the adhesive sheaths at the fracture site.
