The glass ionomer cements have substituted the conventional cements for cementing orthodontic bands and will probably substitue the composites routinely used for bonding orthodontic brackets due to their biologic preventive properties. The porpuse of this paper is to evaluate the direct bonding of brackets in permanent incisors with a light-cured glass ionomer cement (Vitrebond) for levelling and aligning these teeth during the mixed dentition. The results are satisfactory. The glass ionomer cement (Vitrebond 3M, Unitek Corp.) exhibited enough resistance to the forces applied to move the permanent incisors during the mixed dentition period in 17 patients. With the glass ionomer cements, orthodontists can prevent enamel demineralization in two different ways: through the mechanical control of the plaque and through the continuous fluoride release from the material used for cementing orthodontic bands and for direct bonding.
