Orthodontics – Occlusion – Stability

Cristiane MONNERAT, José Nelson MUCHA

The stability at the end of the orthodontic treatment is considered one of the greatest problems faced by the clinic orthodontist and for this reason the search for answers has been a constant. This study objectified to evaluate the existent relationship between the presence of occlusal interferences and lower anterior dental crowding, based on the literature revision and in the observation of a sample of young adult individuals, divided in two groups: a group presenting coincidence between Centric Relation and Maximum Intercuspation, and the other group with difference between these two positions. The plaster models from individuals’ sample dental archs were mounted in semi-adjustable articulator, and the means of Little’s Irregularity Index between these two groups were compared. The conclusions are that it seems to exist a tendency that forces derived from occlusal interferences can contribute to the lower anterior dental crowding, however this observation needs to be confirmed in studies with larger samples. The establishment of a dental occlusion functionally ideal is responsibility of the orthodontist at the end of the treatment to promote the health of the stomatognatic system and to contribute to orthodontic treatment stability.
