The present study consisted of an evaluation of 1000 clinic records of patients examined at the Orthodontic Department of UERJ, ranging in age from 8 to 15 years, 513 girls and 487 boys, 768 white, 101 black and 131 color in between, with the purpose of analise the prevalence of anterior and/or posterior crossbites in deciduous and permanent teeth and compare with sex and color of the patient, type of crossbite and Angle classification. It was concluded that from de 1000 examined patients, 37,6% presented any type of crossbite, which was higher than any other result presented in the literature. The crossbite was more frequently found in girls, color in between white and black and associated with class III maloclusion. The posterior crossbite was found in a higher number of cases (157 patients corresponding to 41,8%) and the total crossbite in a lower number (6 patients corresponding to 1,6%).
