Contemporary Orthodontics has required that clinicians use appliances that have its clinical efficiency scientifically proven. The Herbst appliance since its reintroduction by PANCHERZ in 1979, has been shown to be extremely efficient in the treatment of Class II malocclusion independently of the design used. Although it has been widely used in Europe and in the USA, in Brazil this appliance is not well known. The aim of this article is to describe the clinical steps to the use of the Herbst appliance with stainless steel crowns on the maxillary first molars and a removable mandibular occlusal coverage acrylic, contributing this way to the diffusion of this therapeutic method in the Brazilian orthodontic environment.

Keywords: Class II malocclusion. Stainless steel crowns. Mandibular occlusal coverage acrylic. Herbst appliance.
