This literature review describes the histologic microscopic changes in the glenoid fossa due to treatment with orthopedic appliances and clinical implications of TMJ remodeling. The adapting ability of the glenoid fossa varies according to the type of orthopedic appliance: continuous or intermittent, depending on growth phase of treatment. The condilar displacement extends the viscoelastic retrodiscal tissues resulting in transduction of forces radiating beneath the fibrocartilage of the glenoid fossa and condyle. Several studies have shown that the changes in the condyle could not be maintained during reasonable long-term retention. Orthopedic appliances may, with proper selection and skillful technique, successfully address condilar and glenoid fossa growth modification both in treatment and in retention.
