The purpose of this study was to compare plaque control efficacy of an electric toothbrush (Braun Oral-B Ultra Plaque Remover) with a new manual toothbrush (Cross Action, Oral-B) in patients with fixed orthodontic appliances. The study involved 15 patients, with permanent dentition and fixed appliances, that were selected and submitted to clinical examination, oral hygiene instructions, prophylaxis and determination of plaque index through plaque disclosure with basic fucsin. Results showed that in an orthodontic population, the manual toothbrush removed statistically significant more plaque than the electric toothbrush in all areas of the buccal faces of teeth that contained brackets.
