The aim of the present study was to determine the prevalence of the normal occlusion and malocclusion (Class l, Class ll and Class lll) in a sample constituted with the objective to represent the adult, Caucasian Brazilians, with normal facial profile. The initial criteria used was the passive lip sealment, considered as the minimal condition to the functional facial profile. One hundred (50 each gender), has been molded and photographed. The classification of the sagital occlusal relation revealed that 7% of the sample had normal occlusion, and 93% malocclusion, being 48% Class l, 36% Class ll, division 1, 6% Class ll, division 2 and 3% Class lll. The normality of the sample has been enhanced with the exclusion of 8 persons considered esthetically unpleasant by a heterogeneous group of examiners. The resultant sample was then characterized for the functional and esthetic normality of the facial profile. This group presented 7,6% of normal occlusion, 48,91% Class l, 34,78% Class ll, division 1, 5,44% Class ll, division 2 and 3% Class lll. Finally, 7 individuals with normal occlusion were excluded, because they didn’t have any indication to orthodontic treatment. The malocclusion prevalence in this sample of adults with functional and esthetic profile, and therefore a favorable prognosis to orthodontic treatment was 52,94% Class l, 37,64% Class ll, division 1, 5,9% Class ll, division 2 and 3,52% Class lll.
