This work had as purpose to analyze the plaque and gingival indices in orthodontic patients, by group of teeth according to the orthodontic accessory employed, as well as the effect of the mechanical and chemical plaque control on each of these groups. Sixty six patients were divided into Control group, Mechanical Hygiene group and Chlorhexidine group, then, plaque and gingival indices were registered at the beginning, three and six months of study period by group of teeth (out of accessory, associated with arch wire, bonded and banded). The analysis of the results revealed that the banded teeth presented the biggest index scores and that both mechanical and clinical plaque control methods were able to decrease these indices levels in all groups of teeth, achieving the highest reduction in bonded teeth group using chlorhexidine.
