Primary Headache Prevalence and its Relationship to Temporomandibular Disorders Symptoms at USP Campus, Bauru / SP

The aim of this paper was to investigate the prevalence of primary headaches and symptoms of Temporomandibular Disorders (TMD) in 286 individuals in the Bauru Campus of the University of São Paulo, Brazil. A possible association between both conditions was also evaluated. Sample was requested to fill out an anamnestic questionnaire regarding the most common TMD symptoms and primary headache traditional characteristics. A Chi-square was used to test association between variables, with a 5% of significance. Headache and TMD were found in 34% and 60% of the sample, respectively, both more prevalent in women. As for the type of headache, tensiontype headache was found in 61%, followed by migraine with aura (20.2%). A significant association was detected for the presence of TMD and headache. The co-existence of both conditions stress the need for a proper diagnosis and a multidisciplinary and careful approach when considering the facial/head pain patient.
