Orthodontics and Orthognathic Surgery – from Planning to Finishing

Eduardo SANT´ANA, Marcos JANSON

The orthognatic surgery has been considered in the last years as a safe and predictable procedure. The improvement in surgical techniques, the development of new fixation materials and the numeric determination of facial anatomy normality patterns minimized post-surgical relapse, making it possible as a viable helping procedure to the resolution of dento-facial deformities in adult patients. Taking into account the integration among initial planning, precise previous orthodontic prepare, programmed osteotomies and cosmetic surgery techniques, orthognatic surgery can be described as an esthetic and functional correction procedure, providing the patient a normal occlusion and facial harmony, as well. The procedure preciseness is guaranteed by a protocol that must be followed by each patient, which involves technical steps performed previously to the surgery itself. These steps allow the diagnosis, treatment planning and prognosis of the cases. In the present study, the sequence of orthodontic and surgical procedures performed to the treatment of a patient submitted to orthognatic surgery since diagnostic stage until orthodontic retention will be described, demonstrating the occlusion, skeletal and soft tissue profile modifications provided by interdisciplinary orthodonticsurgical treatment.
