The purpose of this in vitro study was evaluate a hydrophilic and a hydrophobic system behavior in bonding metal brackets to contaminated enamel by human blood. Two bonding agents were evaluated: Single Bond [SB] (3M) and Transbond XT with XT primer [XT] (3M Unitek). Sixty extracted human teeth were divided into three subgroups (n=10) for each of the two adhesives. The adhesives were tested under different conditions: uncontaminated; etched and contaminated with blood; etched, primed and contaminated with blood. In all groups, Transbond XT resin was used to lute orthodontic bracket. After 24 hours in water, shear bond strength (SBS) was performed with an Instron test machine (5mm/min). The data were analyzed with ANOVA and Tukey Post-Hoc test. Blood contamination affected the SBS values of the hydrophobic system (XT) in all conditions. For the hydrophilic system (SB), the blood contamination on the etched enamel had no effect on the SBS values, only when it occurred after primer application.
