Potential Malocclusion

Francisco Ajalmar MAIA, Pedro Alzair Pereira da COSTA, Nair Galvão MAIA

This resarch aimed to show that many data related to malocclusion and normal occlusion available in the Orthodontic literature many times reflect a different clinical reality. This may be result of the used methodology in the many studies, the malocclusion concept and the interpretation of the colected data. The results of a study accomplished in 1519 children, 3 to 14 years old, which 245 in deciduos dentition (3 to 6 years old) had 27,35% of normal occlusion, 67,35% of malocclusion and 5,30% of potential malocclusion; 720 in mixed dentition (7 to 10 years old) showed 15,14% of normal occlusion, 71,53% of malocclusion and 13,33% of potential malocclusion; and finaly, 554 in permanent dentition (11 to 14 years old) exibed 9,40% of normal occlusion, 84,10% of malocclusion and 6,50% of potential malocclusion. We denominated potential malocclusion that one unsuitable as normal occlusion, by tooth loss or persistent abnormal habits, nor as malocclusion because it didnít have abnormal changes yet
